Archer Aviation, a pioneering company in the field of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has announced significant progress in the certification process for its Midnight eVTOL aircraft.

The company’s collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently resulted in key certification milestones being achieved as planned, positioning Archer on track to revolutionize urban travel.

FAA Certification Progress

The FAA’s approval of Archer’s certification plans for the Midnight production aircraft is a major milestone that paves the way for advancing the aircraft’s development.

Notably, Archer has been granted a Special Airworthiness Certificate for its first Midnight aircraft, which signifies the authorization to commence flight test operations.

This achievement positions Archer to transition into “for credit” testing of piloted Midnight aircraft, projected to commence in early 2024.

Strategic Partnership and Innovation

Archer’s strategic approach to aircraft development and certification is rooted in collaboration with globally recognized aerospace suppliers. By sourcing crucial components from industry leaders such as Honeywell, Garmin, and Safran, Archer optimizes efficiency, reliability, and safety.

Leveraging their expertise and established track records, Archer has been able to maintain its certification program on schedule.

The company has strategically chosen to focus its in-house efforts on key enabling technologies while relying on partner suppliers for established components.

Simplified Certification Path

Archer’s deliberate approach has simplified the scope of certification work in the implementation phase of the Midnight’s certification program.

The decision to partner with experienced suppliers for core components and systems has streamlined the process, enabling the company to progress more efficiently.

This strategic alignment with expert suppliers has enabled Archer to position itself for a smoother journey through the final “for credit” phase of the FAA’s Type Certification process.

Archer’s commitment to transforming urban travel aligns with its vision to replace lengthy commutes with swift and sustainable electric air taxi flights. The Midnight eVTOL aircraft, designed for up to four passengers, boasts a range of up to 100 miles.

This groundbreaking aircraft holds the potential to significantly reduce travel times, offering 10-20 minute flights that are not only efficient but also eco-friendly, low-noise, and competitively priced compared to ground transportation.

AFWERX Contract and Air Force Collaboration

Archer’s innovation has attracted substantial attention, as evidenced by the landmark AFWERX contracts with a potential value of up to $142 million. The first Midnight aircraft is slated to be delivered to the U.S. Air Force by the end of this year or early in 2024.

This achievement underlines Archer’s commitment to revolutionizing transportation, making strides toward efficient urban air mobility that aligns with the evolving needs of modern society.
