United Airlines Boeing 777 to Houston Declares Emergency

UPDATE #1 @ 1542 UK time – At this time (1542 UK time), United Airlines flight UA47 to Houston is currently holding over the Channel Islands at FL310.

UPDATE #2 @ 1543 UK time – UA47 is being operated by N795UA, a 25.9 year old Boeing 777-200 that was delivered to the airline back in December 1997, as per data from Planespotters.net.

UPDATE #3 @ 1547 UK time – At this stage, it is unclear what the nature of the emergency is, and which airport the aircraft will be diverting to.

UPDATE #4 @ 1552 UK time – UA47 departed Frankfurt at 1521 local time, and was expected to land into Houston at 1117 local time, although this doesn’t look to be the case currently.

UPDATE #5 @ 1554 UK time – UA47 appears to have exited its hold over the Channel Islands, with the aircraft tracking West currently on the Squawk of 7700.

UPDATE #6 @ 1555 UK time – It looks UA47 is instead extending its hold pattern over the Channel Islands. Unclear still why the aircraft isn’t continuing on to Houston.

UPDATE #7 @ 1557 UK time – This is the third United Airlines-based long-haul emergency this week, with UA47 joining the list.

The first one was with it’s Boeing 767 from New York to Berlin, with the other being on the New York to Rome Fiumicino route.

UPDATE #8 @ 1601 UK time – UA47 is still holding over the Channel Islands at FL310, with no indication into what their next steps will be as of yet.

UPDATE #9 @ 1611 UK time – UA47 has appeared to have exited its hold out of the Channel Islands, and looks to be tracking East. Diversion airport still uncertain.

UPDATE #10 @ 1625 UK time – United Airlines flight UA47 is currently tracking to the north-west of Paris, which does appear to be the closest diversion field currently.

UPDATE #11 @ 1626 UK time – UA47 looks to be returning to Frankfurt, based on sources seen in this tweet.

UPDATE #12 @ 1631 UK time – The aircraft has consistently been at FL310, which rules out the likes of pressurisation issues and any other issues that require a massive drop in altitude.

UPDATE #13 @ 1651 UK time – UA47 has begun its descent back into Frankfurt, with the aircraft not continuing on to Houston at this time.

UPDATE #14 @ 1654 UK time – The 25s are in use at Frankfurt am Main International Airport, although depending on the emergency, UA47 is cleared to use whichever runway they would like.

UPDATE #15 @ 1655 UK time – United Airlines flight UA47, originally bound for Houston, is descending through FL210, as it prepares for arrival back into its origin port of Frankfurt.

UPDATE #16 @ 1701 UK time – UA47 on the downwind for the 25s at Frankfurt.

UPDATE #17 @ 1708 UK time – United Airlines flight UA47 to Houston, is on final approach into its origin airport of Frankfurt am Main International Airport, after over four hours in the air and a 7700 emergency broadcast.

UPDATE #18 @ 1713 UK time – TOUCHDOWN! UA47 has appeared to have touched down safely back into Frankfurt am Main International Airport following its emergency broadcast call that resulted in holds over the Channel Islands. Updates to follow in due course.

UPDATE #19 @ 1822 UK time – United Airlines confirms a technical issue with the airplane, meaning that the flight is cancelled and will not be proceeding onwards to Houston.
