Icelandair has this week announced the addition of flights between Keflavik and Lisbon, as well as a signed partnership with TAP Air Portugal.

The carrier has made waves with this particular announcement, enhancing further connectivity within their network.

Without further ado, let’s get into it…

Icelandair will add flights between Keflavik and Lisbon on October 11, and will run on a twice-weekly basis.

These flights will operate on Mondays and Fridays, but no timings have been put on offer yet.

At the same time, the Icelandic carrier took the opportunity to announce a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Portuguese airline.

The two sides will work together to eventually have a codesharing agreement in place between Iceland and Lisbon as well as to onward destinations.

It is expected this tie-up will be beneficial, especially through their stop-over programs.

Commenting on this major announcement was Bogi Nils Bogason, President and CEO of Icelandair:

“We are very excited to announce Lisbon as the latest addition to our extensive route network and at the same time, increase our partnership with TAP.”

“Lisbon has a lot to offer for our customers, and the increased partnership will add convenient travel corridors to many destinations in Brazil and Africa.”

“We have and will continue to expand our network of partner airlines, focusing on working with airlines that offer great service and connectivity.”

“We are excited to expand our partnership with TAP and look forward to working with them to make the journeys of our passengers smooth and enjoyable.”

Adding to this was Luís Rodrigues, CEO TAP Air Portugal:

“We believe that this partnership with Icelandair will enrich the portfolio of travel choices and destinations we offer to customers throughout our network”.

“As we partner with Icelandair, we will be able to offer seamless flight journeys to Iceland, one of the most exciting travel destinations, and open our comprehensive network of destinations available from our Lisbon hub to all Icelandair customers.”

In conclusion, this represents a big step for Icelandair and it’s flights out of Keflavik as well as for TAP Air Portugal out of Lisbon.

If all goes well with the agreements, then this will provide a unique gap in the market that can be seized.

Looking ahead, all eyes will be on how far the codesharing agreement will go.

Furthermore, through the stop-over model, it will boost tourism in both cities.

For Icelandair, the emphasis does appear to be on the Brazil & Africa routes.

If they can get that aspect secured, then that opens the airline up to more revenue in those markets.

But for now, all eyes on what comes next in this potentially fruitful partnership.
