In total, 42 extra weekly flights will be on offer from Durgapur with IndiGo, which they state is “enhancing trade, travel, and tourism across the eastern part of India.”

Furthermore, in their release, they believe they are revolutionising the way commuters will travel:

Previously, with limited connectivity options and surface transport being a primary source of commute, travel time between Durgapur and Bhubaneswar, Bagdogra, and Guwahati was almost 10 hours, 11 hours, and 21 hours respectively.”

“With IndiGo’s new direct flights, the travel time will be reduced to less than 2 hours on these routes.”

“Furthermore, IndiGo is the only airline offering direct connectivity to all three destinations from Durgapur, further enhancing its commitment to providing convenient travel experiences for passengers while expanding its domestic network”.

It is expected that these flights will prove popular with those in the area for that specific reason.

Malhotra: All About Reducing Travel Time in the Region…

Commenting on the above point further was Mr. Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo:

“We are pleased to announce new routes connecting Durgapur with Bhubaneswar, Bagdogra, and Guwahati.”

“With these direct flights, we aim to provide our customers with further seamless connectivity.”

“These new routes will significantly reduce travel time by up to 90%, providing passengers with more convenient travel options.”

“As India’s leading carrier, we remain committed to providing our customers with seamless connections through the extensive 6E network, across India as well as overseas, while delivering on our promise of providing affordable, on-time, courteous, and hassle-free travel experiences.”

IndiGo is able to operate flights like this thanks to a solid performance recorded in the financial year 2024.

For the quarter ending March 2024, IndiGo reported a net profit of ₹18,948 crore, a significant increase from ₹9,192 crore in the same period last year.

This positive trend continued throughout the entire fiscal year, with a net profit of ₹81,725 crore compared to a net loss of ₹3,058 crore in FY2023.

This translates to a net profit margin of 11.9% for FY2024, a significant achievement.

Key performance indicators (KPIs) across the board reflected the airline’s growth trajectory.

Capacity increased by 21.8% for the year, reaching 139.3 billion passenger kilometers (pax kms). The airline carried 24.7% more passengers, reaching 106.7 million, as capacity increased.

While yield decreased slightly by 1.0%, load factor improved by a healthy 3.8 points to 85.9%, indicating efficient capacity utilization.

In conclusion, IndiGo is revolutionising the way passengers commute within India.

The new flights from Durgapur are set to make a considerable difference reducing the commuting time from a maximum of 21 hours to just two hours.

As mentioned, it is clear that these flights will take off (If you pardon the pun) as many passengers will prefer this option moving forward.

All eyes will be on the launch days on August 30-31 to see what the initial loads are like.

If as expected the flights are popular, then there could be scope for IndiGo to expand the frequencies from Durgapur.

But for now, let’s see how things go in two months time!
