Spain Air Passengers Near 20m In First-Quarter of 2024

The travel body for the government in Spain has revealed this week that air passenger numbers reached nearly 20m in the first quarter of 2024.

Such a figure represents a strong increase ahead of what is expected to be a busy Summer 2024 period already.

Without further ado, let’s get into it…

The official figure for air passengers in Spain was 19.9m, which was just shy of the 20m passenger figure.

This is an increase of 16% compared to the first-quarter in 2023.

Jordi Hereu, the Minister of Industry and Tourism for Spain said the following on this:

“These significant growth figures for air passengers in the first quarter, which include the Easter holidays, are a symptom not only of the good health of our tourism and international confidence in the quality of our destinations, but also of the unstoppable process of deseasonalisation of arrival flows and the end of the distinction between low season and high season that historically characterised this industry”.

It is understood that the UK was the biggest main source market. In the report, the following was mentioned:

“The UK, with 1.6 million international passengers, generated 20.7% of the total flow of arrivals to Spain in March, recording a year-on-year increase of 10.3%.”

“The Canary Islands was the largest recipient of British arrivals, accounting for 36.7% of the total number of passengers of this nationality.”

“The Valencian Community, Andalusia, Catalonia and Galicia were, for their part, the main beneficiaries, registering growth of more than 10% year-on-year.”

“Some 82.3% of British passengers travelled on a low-cost carrier (LCC), with the UK the leader in arrivals on these airlines, accounting for 28.7% of the total.”

These figures for Spain show strong growth in the less busier season.

It is good news for the country’s tourism industry, especially as the Summer 2024 season begins to intensify.

Now is the period where airlines begin to ramp up their frequencies and flights into the popular European tourist destination.

Furthermore, it will be interesting to see what the figures will look like by Q3.

Overall…

In conclusion, Spain is set to have a very busy year for passenger movements.

The Summer 2024 season will be critical for them in this regard.

All eyes will be on the performance figures when the period ends and we enter the Winter.

But one thing is for sure: the country is set to thrive and grow well in the tourism sector.
