Embraer and Avfuel have joined forces to significantly boost the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB).

This collaboration marks a major step forward in Embraer’s journey towards net-zero emission flights.

Building on an existing agreement from July 2021, the new partnership significantly increases SAF deliveries to Embraer.

Previous Supply to FBO

Previously, Avfuel supplied one 8,000-gallon truckload of Neste MY SAF per quarter to Sheltair MLB, the fixed-base operator (FBO) responsible for storing and handling Embraer’s fuel.

Under the updated agreement, which began in April, weekly deliveries are now in place, bringing the expected total for 2024 to 240,000 U.S. gallons – a substantial increase compared to past years.

This shift to weekly deliveries translates to a significant environmental benefit. Each truckload reduces carbon emissions by an estimated 19 metric tons, resulting in a projected total reduction of 570 metric tons for the year.

Stakeholder Comments

Michael Amalfitano, President and CEO of Embraer Executive Jets. “Our collaboration with Avfuel and Sheltair marks a critical milestone in our pursuit of net-zero emission flights.”

“This continued investment in SAF underscores our commitment to reducing emissions now and propelling the industry towards its goal of net-zero aviation by 2050.”

C.R. Sincock, II, Avfuel’s Executive Vice-President: “Embraer has been a champion of SAF adoption since the beginning.”

“We’re honored to contribute to their impressive sustainability journey. We’re significantly increasing SAF supply and aiding them in achieving their commendable goals.”

He also expressed gratitude to Sheltair for their crucial role in facilitating the agreement. This has been achieved through their industry-leading fuel safety and handling services.

Leonel Rivera, Senior Vice-President of FBO Operations for Sheltair. “Sheltair is thrilled to support Embraer by managing the handling and storage of these SAF deliveries.”

“This collaboration between Sheltair, Embraer, and Avfuel exemplifies our shared commitment to achieving the industry’s net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050. By combining our expertise and resources, we can effectively handle and store weekly SAF deliveries.”

Embraer Sustainability Initiatives

Embraer’s investment in SAF continues beyond the Melbourne Orlando initiative. The manufacturer is actively involved in several sustainability initiatives:

  • Enhancing current aircraft efficiency
  • Exploring alternative propulsion technologies with low to zero emissions
  • Offering complimentary carbon offsetting to new Embraer Executive Care customers through a partnership with 4AIR

These efforts align with Embraer’s environmental goals of achieving carbon-neutral operations by 2040 and supporting the industry-wide Fly Net Zero commitment for net-zero aviation by 2050.
