EI-FPN was the airframe in question operating SK609 between Copenhagen and Zurich. The aircraft is a Canadair CL-600-2D24 Regional Jet CRJ-900.

As per data from Planespotters.net, EI-FPN is a 6.2 year old airframe, which originally started out life with Irish carrier CityJet back in June 2017.

The jet was ferried over from Mirabel, Canada to Copenhagen via a stopover in Keflavik on the way due to a fuel stop.

In that same month, the aircraft was transferred over to SAS, with the aircraft being operated by CityJet directly.

SK609 departed Copenhagen, bound for Zurich, at 1811 local time on August 27, and around 5-10 minutes after the flight took off, the lightning struck the aircraft.

From there, the jet proceeded in a series of holds, before arriving back into the Danish capital over an hour and a half after departure.

At the time of writing (29/8/23 @ 2125 UK time), the aircraft has not left Copenhagen since that incident, indicating that the damage is severe enough to ground the jet.

It is also unclear when the jet will be deemed airworthy again, as damage assessment and repairs have to be made in order to get the jet back in the air again.

For now, all eyes are on the team at SAS to see when the jet gets back in the air again.
