In the last few moments, a Ryanair Boeing 737-800 has been struck by lightning over Liverpool whilst on the final moments of approach.

The aircraft then cancelled its approach and at the time of writing is holding at around 3,000 feet.

Ryanair flight FR9593 is the aircraft affected by this, being operated by EI-DLV, a Boeing 737-8AS with the Irish low-cost carrier.
At this stage, it is unclear where the aircraft is going to go, and is heading northwest over Formby.

UPDATE #1 @ 1947 UK time – At this time, it looks like FR9593 is going to attempt a landing onto Runway 09 into Liverpool instead of into 27. Although this could end up in more holding.
UPDATE #2 @ 1949 UK time – Local Facebook groups have reported that Ryanair flight FR9593 got struck by lighting over Kirby.
UPDATE #3 @ 1950 UK time – At this time, the aircraft does appear to be safe as it hasn’t squawked 7700 at this time, although if it can’t land in Liverpool, a diversion may have to occur. The jet is at 3,500 feet currently.

UPDATE #4 @ 1954 UK time – Recent metars courtesy of RadarBox.com show how badly the weather has turned at Liverpool, with thunderstorms reported in the vicinity.

UPDATE #5 @ 1957 UK time – Ryanair flight FR9593 bound for Liverpool has extended its holding pattern to the Southwest of Liverpool Airport at 3,500 feet.

UPDATE #6 @ 2001 UK time – FR9593 now seems to be heading east. With it being at 3,500 feet, it could very well be setting itself up for a diversion into Manchester.
UPDATE #7 @ 2004 UK time – Ryanair flight FR9593 seems to be descending through 2,000 feet, so it could very well be another approach attempt into Liverpool’s Runway 27 first.
