PIA flight PK781, which diverted to Karachi, is a routine scheduled flight between Islamabad and Toronto.

The aircraft involved in this incident is registered as AP-BGZ.

As per data from Planespotters.net, AP-BGZ is a 19.0 year old 777-200LR which started off with Boeing as their Worldliner in April 2005.

By March 2006, the aircraft was delivered to PIA where it has been since.

Of the 777-200 variant, the airline has eight in the fleet.

Furthermore, of that eight, all but one are in active service, hosting an average fleet age of 19.2 years.

PIA flight PK781 departed Islamabad at 0521 local time yesterday morning and climbed north to Toronto initially.

However, over Russia, the aircraft made a u-turn and subsequent beeline back to Pakistan.

From there, it was decided that Karachi would be the diversion field for the aircraft.

PK781 landed safely into Karachi without further incident at 0118 local time this morning.

The Aviation Herald reported that there was an issue with their hydraulics, which was described as “minor”.

Quick Fix Expected?

The aircraft remained on the ground overnight, and at the time of writing (18/5/24 @ 1215 UK time), AP-BGZ is back in the air as PIA781D.

With this in mind, it looks as if the passengers from Islamabad originally will continue on to Toronto.

Data from RadarBox shows that AP-BGZ is expected to operate the PK784 rotation back to Karachi tomorrow.

For now, it appears as if the issue is fixed, but has caused an inconvenience to passengers due to delays.
