LH462 is a routine flight between Frankfurt and Miami, with the aircraft departing from the German airport at 1203 local time earlier today.

Upon entering the Jacksonville FIR, the aircraft took a significant deviation to the west and headed south all the way as far as Key West.

From there, the Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 then turned back North again, before descending into Tampa where it is diverting to instead.

As per data from Planespotters.net, D-ABYU is a 8.6 year old 747-8I aircraft that was delivered to the German carrier back in April 2015.

The German carrier has a fleet of 27 Boeing 747 Family aircraft, consisting of seven of the -400 variant, and 19 of the -8 variant.

Of the 27 aircraft, one is currently parked in storage at this present moment.

It is unclear still why the aircraft has diverted into Tampa, and not proceeded into Miami. There is precipitation in the area, but the cloud base is very high at around FL250, and the winds are relatively calm as well.

There is the chance that this precipitation is the cause of this diversion, but at this stage, things are still unclear regarding this.

It is also unclear if the aircraft will continue on to Miami later on, or whether it will do Tampa to Frankfurt instead.

This is a developing story.
