It has emerged that there is currently a Lufthansa Airbus A340 returning back to Frankfurt and not continuing on to Chennai following an unspecified problem.

LH758 between Frankfurt and Chennai is being operated by D-AIGV, one of the airline’s Airbus A340-300 aircraft in the Star Alliance livery.

UPDATE #1 @ 1244 UK time – LH758 is currently at FL70 to the east of Frankfurt am Main International Airport. Still unclear into why this flight isn’t continuing on to Chennai.

UPDATE #2 @ 1245 UK time – As per data from Planespotters, D-AIGV, the Airbus A340 operating the flight for Lufthansa is a 23.7 year old airframe at the time of writing, having been delivered to the German carrier in February 2000.

Lufthansa has a fleet of 17 Airbus A340-300s and 10 of the -600 variant, with the -300s having an average age of 24.0 years and the -600s having an average age of 16.

UPDATE #3 @ 1247 UK time – LH758 is on finals into Frankfurt, with the reason still unclear for the return. What we know is that the aircraft isn’t squawking 7700 so the problem onboard is clearly under control, whatever that may be.

UPDATE #4 @ 1255 UK time – TOUCHDOWN! Lufthansa flight LH758, originally bound for Chennai, has appeared to have safely touched down in Frankfurt am Main, following the decision to turn back around with an unspecified issue.
