KLM Boeing 777 makes emergency return to Amsterdam

LONDON – A scheduled KLM flight KL591 from Amsterdam to Johannesburg was forced to make an emergency return to Amsterdam today.

A KLM Boeing 777-200ER, registration PH-BQO, operating as flight KL591 had departed Amsterdam Airport Schiphol bound for Johannesburg at 11.00 AM local time today.

The flight was over the Mediterranean to the East of Menorca, Spain at FL330 when it declared an emergency, approximately one hour 30 minutes into the flight.

The aircraft squawked 7700 before initiating a return to Amsterdam Airport at FL280.

The returning flight KL591 was met by emergency services upon its return, where it landed without further incident.

The national safety body, Dutch Onderzoeksraad (DSB), advised that they had dispatched investigators to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in response to the aircraft which returned with what was characterised as “cabin problems.”
