Houston bound Lufthansa flight returns to Frankfurt

A scheduled Lufthansa long-haul flight operating from Frankfurt to Houston has initiated a turnaround whilst enroute and is current on return to Frankfurt.

Lufthansa flight LH440, an Airbus A330 operating the transatlantic service between Frankfurt Am Main International Airport (FRA) and Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) executed the diversion after transiting French airspace outbound.

Flight data shows that this morning’s LH440 service made a departure out of it’s base at 10:25 local time, off a scheduled departure time of 10:00 local.

The flight proceeded normally, establishing on the westerly track for the transatlantic crossing and climbing to FL340 (34,000 feet) before executing the turnaround as it passed to the west of the French coast.

The flight did not declare a formal emergency and has made the return to Frankfurt under normal operating procedures. The nature of the problem resulting in the subsequent early return is not yet known.

Weather for the flight’s return is visual flight conditions (VFR) with visibility 10 kilometres or more, and cloud ceiling of 3,400 feet.

The aircraft conducting this morning’s LH440 service to Houston is an Airbus A330-300 registered D-AIKQ; an 11-year old widebody aircraft belonging to the German national carrier Lufthansa.
