In the last 30 minutes, the FAA has issued a ground stop at New York JFK and Newark following the New Jersey Earthquake.
The earthquake is understood to have been measured at 4.8 magnitude, and is rare for the area.

Ground Stop At JFK & Newark…
It is understood that the ground stop placed by the FAA is in place until 4:30pm GMT +1 today.
The scale of the damage needs to be assessed before normal operations can resume from both JFK and Newark.
At the moment, there doesn’t seem to be any damage in the area following the earthquake in New Jersey.
Residents in the area noticed the earthquake, with areas as far as Boston and Philadelphia also feeling it too.
No injuries or deaths have been reported.
All eyes will be on when operations restart at New York JFK and Newark.
The image above shows the scene at Newark Airport following the ground stop.
Departures are lining up in their droves, getting ready to depart as soon as the ground stop in EWR and JFK comes to an end.
There will no doubt be delays applied to flights following this disruption today.
As soon as we have more information pertinent to this, then we will update the article accordingly.

Average Delays Around 30 Minutes Currently…
Average delays at JFK is currently at 33 minutes, with Newark currently at 31 minutes, as per the FAA.
The probability of the ground stop being extended stands at “Medium” risk currently following the New Jersey Earthquake.
Current View from JFK…
Current view from JFK courtesy of RadarBox shows flights landing into JFK. Unclear whether the ground stop has been lifted for them as of yet.
Not many departures waiting at present.
Newark Ground Stop Extended…
The JFK Ground Stop has been removed by the FAA.
However, the ground stop at Newark has been extended until 5:30pm GMT+1.
Departures Mounting up at Newark…
The live view from Newark Liberty International Airport currently as departures mount up. The ground stop extension likelihood still set as “Medium”.
Average Delay Time Doubles…
The average delay time at Newark has doubled to 63 minutes currently. Unclear how much more this will increase at present.
Aircraft Taking off from Newark…
Aircraft do appear to be departing from Newark, New Jersey.

Arrivals Accepted As Well…
Arrivals into Newark seem to have restarted as well.
Pictured is UA2724 which has landed from Minneapolis. Things look to be restarting slowly currently.
Average Delay for Arrivals = 45 Minutes…
The FAA has produced an update on the arrivals front for flights into Newark.
It is understood the average delay is 45 minutes.
As a reminder, the current delay for departures sit at 63 minutes.
Defining the Newark Ground Stop…
So it looks like the definition of the Newark Ground Stop is the slowdown of aircraft flow out of the airport.
Within FAA terminology, this can also include the cessation of all departures and arrivals out of an airport in the U.S.
It’s a promising sign at least that things have slowed, and not stopped in it’s entirety.
Multiple Aircraft In The Hold Waiting to Land…
Quite a few aircraft have been spotted holding to the north of Newark as arrival numbers get restricted.
Finding Out Shortly Regarding Another Extension…
The current ground stop at Newark expires in less than 10 minutes.
We should have an update from the FAA shortly on whether this will be extended again following the earthquake in New Jersey.
“Ground Stop” Changes to “Ground Delay”…
The Ground Stop at Newark has come to an end, with the status changing to “Ground Delay”.
It is understood that the average delays for departures stands at 77 minutes and 45 minutes for arrival.
This is expected to continue until April 6 @ 0259 GMT+1.
