Detroit-bound Delta flight returns to Amsterdam with ‘operational issue’

A Delta Air Lines transatlantic flight bound for Detroit from Amsterdam was made a return to Amsterdam in the early stages of the flight, due to what was characterised as an ‘operational issue’ on Tuesday 13 February.

Delta Air Lines flight DL133, an Airbus A330-300 operating a long haul service from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).

Having departed Amsterdam at 10:29 local time of Tuesday 13 February, flight DL133 had established on course and climbed to cruising altitude FL340 (34,000 feet).

Just over an hour into the flight, and passing over United Kingdom airspace in preparation for the transatlantic segment of the flight, the decision was made to execute a turnaround and return to AMS.

Maggot Infestation in Cabin Baggage

A report from Airlive, supported by posts on social media, indicates that the turnaround resulted after maggots were detected dropping from an overhead locker in the passenger cabin.

The source of the infestation, which resulted in maggots reportedly dropping on passengers, was a bag in the overhead locker which contained rotten fish.

The aircraft conducting the long-haul DL133 service to Detroit, MI was an Airbus A330-323 registered N821NW; a 16-year old widebody aircraft belonging to the US carrier Delta Air Lines.

The subsequent return to Amsterdam was conducted under normal operating procedures. The aircraft underwent cleaning before a return to service.

A subsequent service operating under DL133 from AMS to Detroit departed at 10:29 local time the following day, Wednesday 14.
