SWISS flight LX180 is a routine scheduled flight between Zurich and Bangkok.

The aircraft involved in the incident is registered as HB-JNB.

As per data from Planespotters.net, HB-JNB is a 8.2 year old Boeing 777-300ER that was delivered to the airline in March 2016.

Of the Boeing 777-300ER variant, SWISS have 12 in their long-haul fleet.

Furthermore, of that 12, all of them are in active service, with an average fleet age of 7.1 years.

LX180 departed Zurich at 1949 local time on June 4 and initially tracked east towards Bangkok.

However, over the Black Sea, the aircraft opted to make a u-turn back to the Swiss airport.

It is clear to note that during this u-turn, the aircraft didn’t declare an emergency utilising the 7700 squawk code.

LX180, originally bound for Bangkok, landed safely back into Zurich at 2253 local time.

As per AirLive, it is understood that the issue at hand was due to an issue with the aircraft’s weather radar system.

Furthermore, it is understood that there were thunderstorms expected at the Thai destination, which would have made it unsafe to continue.

Data from RadarBox highlights that HB-JNB was grounded in Zurich following this incident with the Bangkok-bound flight.

It is understood that the issue has now been fixed and the aircraft is expected to operate the LX92 service to Sao Paulo tonight.

LX92 is expected to depart from ZRH at 2240 local time and arrive into Sao Paulo at 0525 local time.

All eyes will be on whether the issue at hand has been sufficiently fixed.
