The Atlas Air Boeing 747 that suffered tire damage in Los Angeles over a week ago has suffered the same in Seoul yesterday.
Information has been released pertinent to this incident, which we will get into in this article.
Without further ado, let’s get into it…
Atlas Air Flight 5Y8692 – Seoul to Anchorage…
Atlas Air flight 5Y8692 is a routine scheduled flight between Seoul and Anchorage.
The aircraft operating this flight is N429MC.
As per data from Planespotters.net, N429MC is a 33.7 year old Boeing 747 that originally started out life with All Nippon Airways in October 1990.
By April 2008, the aircraft was handed over to Atlas Air after being converted into a cargo aircraft.
Of the 747-400 Freighter variant, 5Y has 48 of them in the fleet.
Furthermore, of that 48, all but seven are in active service, with an average age of 24.3 years.
Atlas Air flight 5Y8692 departed Seoul at 0528 local time yesterday morning and initially climbed out to Anchorage.
However, as per RadarBox data (See above), you can see that the aircraft suddenly tracked west and started holding.
Furthermore, this was due to tire damage causing a hydraulic issue on the aircraft, as per The Aviation Herald.
After landing, it was clear that the back tires on the back of the landing gear had been damaged (See image above).
Recap of the First Incident in Los Angeles…
On June 3, the same Atlas Air Boeing 747 from Anchorage landed into Los Angeles with a blown tire on it’s landing gear.
Atlas Air flight 5Y8350 departed Anchorage at 1029 local time on June 2 and tracked south to Los Angeles.
As seen above, on landing, it was observed that the Atlas Air Boeing 747 suffered a blown tire and was seen from the gear itself.
Furthermore, the aircraft landed safely into LAX at 1614 local time and was able to taxi to a stand without assistance.
So, if anything, it hasn’t been a good 10 days for the aircraft.
Aircraft Grounded Until Further Notice…
Once again, N429MC, the Atlas Air Boeing 747, is grounded whilst more repairs take place following the tire damage.
Furthermore, it is unclear how long it will take for the aircraft to be fixed, especially with the hydraulic failure in the mix.
One thing is for certain: This particular airframe has had a bit of bad luck over the last 10 days.
All eyes will be on it’s eventual return to commercial freighter service in the days and weeks ahead.
