A backpack belonging to American Idol contestant Jimmy Levy exploded on a JetBlue flight bound for Fort Lauderdale from New York JFK.

It is understood this incident took place on JetBlue flight B61401 between New York & Fort Lauderdale on October 30. The affected rotation was N613JB.

As per data from Planespotters.net, N613JB is a 18.5 year old Airbus A320 that was first delivered to the airline back in June 2005.

Of the A320 variant, the U.S carrier has 129 of them, of which 120 are in active service.

Video from American Idol contestant Jimmy Levy shows cabin crew pouring water over his backpack, which exploded. Luckily, this explosion didn’t take place in the hold, which would have been more difficult to control.

In a statement, JetBlue said the following on the incident which took place on October 30:

“On Monday, October 30, JetBlue flight 1401 with scheduled service from New York’s JFK Airport to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Intl. Airport (FLL) was evacuated while at the gate before takeoff due to a customer’s malfunctioning electronic device or battery.”

“Our crew immediately responded and addressed the situation, and there were no requests for medical assistance. Safety is our number one priority, and we are investigating the incident.”

The flight was subsequently cancelled following this incident, but the next day, the rotation operated again, but was operated by N536JB instead. As for N613JB, it operated services the next day.
