American Airlines 777 Munich-Charlotte Diverting to Montreal

It has emerged that an American Airlines Boeing 777 operating AA717 from Munich to Charlotte will be diverting to Montreal, with the reason unknown.

American Airlines flight AA717 is being operated by N758AN, one of the airline’s Boeing 777-223ER aircraft.

As per data from Planespotters.net, N758AN is a 22.0 year old aircraft, which was first delivered to the airline back in November 2001.

Of the 777-200 variant, the airline currently has 47 of them, of which 43 are in active service, and the other four are parked.

Across the fleet of those jets, there is an average age of 22.9 years.

It is unclear currently why American Airlines flight AA717 between Munich and Charlotte is diverting to Montreal, but such information has thus far been confirmed across most flight tracking applications.

The American Airlines website does note that the aircraft is diverting to Montreal, but does not state a reason into why this is happening.

However, AA717 is expected to depart the Canadian airport at 1440 local time, and continue on to Charlotte.

AA717 has entered into Canadian airspace now, with the expectation that such a diversion will be completed in the next few hours.

AviationSource will approach the airline for a comment regarding this diversion. As soon as we acquire that information, we will update the piece accordingly.

UPDATE #1 @ 1528 UK time – AA717 is currently tracking Canadian airspace, with landing expected in the next few hours.

UPDATE #2 @ 1540 UK time – American Airlines flight AA717 from Munich to Charlotte is currently over Newfoundland, with the diversion to Montreal still ongoing.

UPDATE #3 @ 1601 UK time – It looks like AA717 is at FL160, although this is unconfirmed currently due to ADS-B coverage in the area. Quite far out from the Canadian airport at this time.

UPDATE #4 @ 1630 UK time – FlightRadar24 still has AA717 at FL160 to the north of Quebec City, with Montreal still confirmed as the diversion field.

UPDATE #5 @ 1645 UK time – AA717 no longer under Satellite coverage now and is back on ADS-B. Altitude via @RadarBoxCom was at 15,350 feet previously. So whether it descended early to burn fuel or not is unclear currently.

UPDATE #6 @ 1708 UK time – AA717 tracking near Quebec as the Boeing 777 gets closer to Montreal following the decision to divert there a few hours ago.

UPDATE #7 @ 1724 UK time – AA717 has commenced its descent into the Canadian airport.

UPDATE #8 @ 1727 UK time – AA717 looks to be going for a straight-in approach for Montreal based on the current heading.

UPDATE #9 @ 1744 UK time – TOUCHDOWN! American Airlines flight AA717 between Munich and Charlotte has appeared to have completed it’s diversion into Montreal. As soon as we find the issue, we will update you accordingly.
