Air India flight AI119 is a routine scheduled flight between Mumbai and New York JFK, with the affected rotation being operated by VT-AEI.

As per data from Planespotters.net, VT-AEI is a 14.5 year old Boeing 777-200 that started out life with Delta Air Lines as N708DN back in June 2009.

In April 2021, the aircraft was handed over to Mammoth Freighters, before being handed over to Jetran in February 2023 and then DHL in March 2023.

The aircraft was subsequently stored in Singapore until August 2023, and then Air India took delivery of the aircraft instead.

AI119 departed Mumbai at 0220 local time this morning, inbound for New York JFK. Upon reaching Iranian airspace, the aircraft then turned around back in the direction of the origin airfield.

Throughout this return, the aircraft did not declare an emergency, which is notably seen through the transmission of the 7700 squawk code or by declaring a pan pan to ATC.

According to Times Now News in India, it is understood the reason for this return was due to a minor technical issue, although such a problem wasn’t specified by the airline.

Since it’s arrival back into Mumbai, VT-AEI has been on the ground since, with no indication into when the AI119 rotation will take the affected passengers to New York JFK.
