The 2023 Bombardier Safety Standdown keynote address delivered by National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) President and CEO Ed Bolen has emphasized the importance of safety within the aviation industry.

NBAA has long been a leading supporter and sponsor of the Bombardier Safety Standdown, which runs through November 9.

The theme of the conference, “Integrity in Safety,” underscores the industry’s commitment to maintaining trust and incorruptibility in its safety efforts.

The focus on air safety

Bolen highlighted the various challenges and factors that could potentially compromise safety, such as fatigue, distraction, confusion, pressure, and addiction.

He stressed that the aviation industry relies on trust, not only from the public but also from companies, individuals, and their families. This trust is built on the expectation that flights will be safe, and passengers will land safely.

The choice of Wichita, KS, as the conference’s host city is seen as symbolically significant, representing a central location in the United States and the core values of the industry.

Bolen mentions that safety was also a central focus at the 2023 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) in Las Vegas, NV.

This emphasis on safety reflects the industry’s recognition of the ease with which safety efforts can be compromised, making it essential to continuously celebrate and improve safety standards.

Actions beyond the Bombardier Standdown event

Bolen believes that the lessons learned at Safety Standdown will extend beyond the event. The industry professionals attending the conference aim to collaborate, share knowledge, and influence changes in how aviation operates, how it is regulated, and how it is legislated.

He also mentioned the NBAA’s mission, which was established over 75 years ago to foster an environment that allows business aviation to thrive.

This mission has always included a strong focus on safety and the perception of safety, as well as advocating for laws and regulations that support and facilitate safe aviation practices.

Summary

Bolen’s recognition of various challenges and factors that could compromise safety, such as fatigue, distraction, confusion, pressure, and addiction, demonstrates a deep understanding of the complexities and risks involved in aviation operations.

Addressing these challenges and promoting safety measures is essential to ensure that trust in the industry remains strong.

It’s encouraging to see that Bolen believes the lessons learned at Bombardier Safety Standdown will extend beyond the event.

Collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the potential to influence changes in aviation operations, regulations, and legislation are key steps in ensuring that safety remains a top priority in the industry.
