Neste and Amelia, a French regional airline, have closed an agreement for the supply of blended Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Amelia has been using the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for all its flights departing from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol since 1 January, 2024.

This arrangement marks a further step in the aviation industry’s efforts to mitigate its environmental impact while meeting the growing demand for air travel.

Amsterdam SAF Operations

Amelia, has embraced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for all flights departing from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol since January 1, 2024.

This collaboration contributes to Amelia’s strategy to reduce its operational emissions footprint, enabling the airline to use nearly 5% SAF as part of its total yearly fuel consumption.

This is already considerably more than the 2% SAF usage mandated from 2025 onwards as part of the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation regulation.

As it stands, the airline surpasses the requirements set forth by the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which mandates a minimum of 2% SAF usage starting in 2025.

Route Optimization for Environmental Impact

The Amsterdam to Strasbourg route, a longstanding service operated by Amelia since 2022, will now exclusively utilize SAF.

This initiative not only demonstrates Amelia’s commitment to sustainable practices but also serves as a testament to the viability of SAF in commercial aviation operations.

Alain Regourd, President of Amelia by Regourd Aviation, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Neste, highlighting the compatibility of Neste’s solution with Amelia’s existing fleet.

“Their solution is a perfect fit with our Embraer and Airbus fleet, which can already fly on up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel,” said Regourd.

Regourd emphasized Amelia’s eagerness to expand its use of sustainable fuels and continue its journey towards carbon neutrality.

Alexander Kueper, leading Renewable Aviation Business at Neste, echoed Regourd’s sentiments, emphasizing the critical role of decarbonization in aviation.

Kueper reiterated Neste’s commitment to supporting Amelia in its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reaffirmed their dedication to ongoing collaboration.

Adrien Chabot, Head of Innovation & Sustainability at Amelia, referred to the significance of sustainable aviation fuel in the company’s overall strategy.

“The use of sustainable aviation fuel is a major pillar of Amelia’s decarbonization strategy, complementing the company’s other development axes,” said Chabot

Chabot further emphasized Amelia’s proactive stance in embracing sustainable practices ahead of regulatory mandates, positioning the airline as a leader in sustainable regional aviation.

Understanding Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Sustainable aviation fuel offers a renewable alternative to traditional jet fuel, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout its lifecycle.

Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, derived from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, boasts an impressive reduction of up to 80% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuel.

Notably, this fuel is compatible with existing aircraft engines and fueling infrastructure, ensuring a smooth transition towards sustainable aviation practices.
