Last Sunday, a Wideroe flight bound for Kristiansand made an emergency landing into it’s departure field or Bergen due to smoke in the cabin and an engine shutdown.

The chain of events on this incident has been revealed, as we will get into in this article.

Wideroe WF591 – Bergen to Kristiansand…


Last Sunday, a Wideroe flight bound for Kristiansand made an emergency landing into it's departure field or Bergen due to smoke in the cabin and an engine shutdown.

Wideroe flight WF591, which made an emergency landing, is a routine scheduled flight between Bergen and Kristiansand.

The aircraft in question involved in this incident is registered as LN-WDT.

As per data from Planespotters.net, LN-WDT is a 14.4 year old Bombardier DHC-8-400 that first started out life with airBaltic in May 2010.

In October 2022, the aircraft was sent over to Nordic Aviation Capital before being sent to Flybe 2.0 in January 2023.

It was then sent back to NAC following the failure of 2.0, and was given to Wideroe in July 2023.

Of the aircraft variant, the Norwegian carrier has 16 of them in the fleet.

Within that 16, all but one are in active service, featuring an average fleet age of 14.8 years.

Wideroe flight WF591, which made an emergency landing, departed from Bergen at 1724 local time on April 21 and initially climbed out to Kristiansand.

To the east of Haugesund, the aircraft made a u-turn back to the departure field amid an issue onboard.

After nearly 30 minutes, the aircraft landed safely without further incident.

As per The Aviation Herald, it is understood that the cause of the return was due to smoke in the cabin.

Also, as a precaution, the crew shut down the left hand engine on the aircraft too.

Aircraft Still Grounded…

At the time of writing (23/4/24 @ 1325 UK time), the Wideroe aircraft is still grounded in Bergen following this emergency landing.

All eyes will be on how long it takes to fix the issues onboard the aircraft.

Furthermore, once they are fixed, then the aircraft can return to commercial service.
