United Airlines 787 Singapore-San Francisco Declares Emergency

A United Airlines Boeing 787-9 from Singapore to San Francisco has declared an emergency. The aircraft has squawked code 7700 whilst outbound from Singapore, and is currently returning.

United Airlines flight UA28 declared the emergency whilst to the east of Singapore on the outbound route to San Francisco (SFO).

Flight UA28 was on climb through flight level FL310 (31,000 feet) before it terminated the climb and made good a direct return to Singapore.

The nature of the emergency prompting the expedited return is not yet known.

Update 14:40 UTC

Flight UA28 is now passing through FL150 as it continues descent for its return to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). The aircraft is maintaining the emergency squawk code 7700.

Weather for the flight’s return is visual meteorological conditions (VFR) with visibility 10 kilometres or more. RWY 20 is currently active for the arrival with light winds at 2kt.

Update 15:00 UTC

Flight UA28 is now under vectoring for an approach to RWY20 SIN, and passing through 2,500 feet as it establishes on finals.

The flight crew have maintained transponder code 7700 for emergency priority, since the turnaround to the east of Singapore earlier today.

United Airlines flight UA28, originally bound for San Francisco (SFO), is now landed and clear RWY20 Singapore (SIN). This follows an emergency declaration and subsequent return to the departure airport.

The aircraft conducting today’s UA28 rotation to San Francisco (SFO) was a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, registered N27957.

This is an 8.8-year old widebody aircraft belonging to the US carrier United Airlines. It has been in operational service with the carrier since its initial delivery in August 2015.

As per @FlightEmergency on X, United Airlines flight UA28 to San Francisco made an emergency declaration and return to Singapore due to an issue on engine #1, which resulted in a full shutdown.
