TUI 787 Manchester-Punta Cana Declares Emergency

In the last few moments, a TUI UK Boeing 787 bound for Punta Cana declared an emergency minutes after departure from Manchester.

Information is limited regarding this incident, but here is what we know so far.

TUI UK Flight BY156, which declared an emergency, is a routine scheduled flight between Manchester and Punta Cana.

The aircraft involved in today’s incident is registered as G-TUIL.

As per data from Planespotters.net, G-TUIL is a 6.2 year old Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner that was delivered to the airline in March 2018.

Of the 787-9 variant, the airline has five of them, of which all are in active service.

Furthermore, average fleet age for the type stands at 5.8 years.

TUI UK also has eight of the -8 variant, with an average fleet age of 10.2 years.

BY156 departed Manchester at 1040 local time this morning, and initially climbed out to Punta Cana.

However, at around 5,000 feet, the climb stopped and an emergency was declared by the crew.

From there, a u-turn was made back to MAN, where the aircraft landed safely without further incident at 1058 UK time.

Smoke/Fumes in the Cockpit…

As per @FlightEmergency on X, it is understood that smoke/fumes were reported in the cockpit by the pilots on TUI UK flight BY156 between Manchester and Punta Cana.

The aircraft was met by emergency crews on arrival into the airport.

At this stage, it is unclear what happens next regarding this incident.

G-TUIL will no doubt get taken out of service pending the relevant checks and maintenance if necessary.

For now, this remains a developing story pending additional information.

UPDATE #1 @ 1109 UK time – Multiple flights holding due to the emergency still on the runway. It is understood Runway 23L will be used for regulated arrivals whilst this incident is dealt with.

Emergency UPDATE #2 @ 1114 UK time – First of many held aircraft going in for the approach onto Runway 23L.

UPDATE #3 @ 1121 UK time – BY156 appears to be on the move and will be vacating 23R, which should clear the way for ILS operations to resume.

UPDATE #4 @ 1122 UK time – Runway vacated. The aircraft will taxi to a stand. Thank you for following our coverage.
