Kenya Airways 787 Nairobi-London Declares Emergency

UPDATE #1 @ 1521 UK time – Kenya Airways flight KQ100 is descending out of FL390, with the expectation that the London-bound flight will continue to Heathrow as filed.

UPDATE #2 @ 1524 UK time – KQ100 between Nairobi and Heathrow is being operated by 5Y-KZH, one of the airline’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.

The airline has a total fleet of nine 787-8 Dreamliners, with one of them in active service and one currently parked.

As per data from Planespotters, the aircraft is a 8.4 year old airframe which was first delivered to the carrier back in October 2015.

UPDATE #3 @ 1526 UK time – KQ100 is descending through FL240 as it leaves the French coast and gets closer to the London area.

UPDATE #4 @ 1531 UK time – KQ100 is just about to enter England, descending through FL150 at around 2,500fpm.

UPDATE #5 @ 1534 UK time – KQ100 is edging closer to London Heathrow, with the current runway in use for arrival being Runway 27L, although they have any preference in an emergency.

UPDATE #6 @ 1536 UK time – KQ100 has changed its squawk code from 7700 to 4040, indicating that the emergency onboard is under control. Will still continue to monitor the flight on its approach.

UPDATE #7 @ 1539 UK time – Kenya Airways flight KQ100 looks to be approaching the base leg into Heathrow. The 787 is at FL80 so unclear whether it will perform holds as of yet due to traffic.

UPDATE #8 @ 1540 UK time – KQ100 descending quick out of FL80 now, so will be going in for its approach at Heathrow.

UPDATE #9 @ 1542 UK time – Turning final for Heathrow now.

UPDATE #10 @ 1548 UK time – TOUCHDOWN! Kenya Airways flight KQ100 from Nairobi has safely touched down into London Heathrow following an emergency broadcast over Paris, which was later brought under control. Standby for updates.

UPDATE #11 @ 0912 UK time @ 10/10/23 – Kenya Airways have confirmed that the cause of yesterday’s emergency was a medical.
