Gulf Air A320 from Bahrain – Jeddah declares emergency

A Gulf Air scheduled flight from Bahrain to Jeddah has declared an emergency and is currently making a return to Bahrain.

Gulf Air flight GF183, an Airbus A320-200 operating a scheduled service between Bahrain International Airport (BAH) and Jeddah (JED) declared a general emergency, squawking code 7700 shortly after departure.

The flight is currently on descent and initiating a return to Bahrain (BAH).

Flight GF183 had made its departure out of Bahrain International Airport earlier today, and was climbing through FL320 (32,000 feet) and establishing on the outbound track for Jeddah (JED) when it initiated the turnaround.

With the flight now establishing on finals for RWY30 BAH, weather for the return is Visual Meteorological Conditions (VFR) with light winds, no cloud and visibility 10 kilometres or more.

The nature of the emergency warranting the precautionary return to BAH is not yet known.

The aircraft conducting today’s flight is an Airbus A320-200 registered A9C-AD; a 14-year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Gulf Air.

Gulf Air is the national flag carrier, and the oldest airline in the Gulf region. It was founded in 1950, and began operating scheduled flights in 1951.

The airline is headquartered in Muharraq, and operates a fleet of 35 aircraft, including Airbus A320neo, Airbus A321neo, Airbus A330-200, and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

It is understood that Airbus A320 registration A9C-AD which operated today’s service experienced technical problems with the cabin pressurization system after take-off, resulting in the decision to make a precautionary return to Bahrain.
