Delta Air Lines A350 Amsterdam-Detroit Declares Emergency

LONDON – A Delta Air Lines A350 from Amsterdam to Detroit has declared an emergency and is returning to Amsterdam.

The reason for the return to Amsterdam is not yet known, however, it was around 90 minutes after take-off when the decision to return was made.

Update 1 – DL135 has entered UK airspace and is returning to Amsterdam.

This is a developing story

UPDATE #2 @ 2301 UK time – Delta Air Lines flight DL135, originally bound for Detroit, is continuing it’s emergency diversion back to Amsterdam Schiphol. As soon as we know what the cause is, we will update accordingly.

UPDATE #3 @ 2302 UK time – The affected rotation is being operated by N506DN, one of the airline’s Airbus A350-900 aircraft. As per Planespotters.net, the jet was delivered to the carrier back in December 2017.

Of the A350-900 variant, the U.S carrier has 28 of them in the fleet, of which all of them are in active service at this present time.

UPDATE #4 @ 2304 UK time – DL135 is currently cruising at FL380 at 540kts ground speed. Pressurisation issues can be ruled out as the aircraft would have descended rapidly as a result.

UPDATE #5 @ 2311 UK time – DL135 has initiated it’s descent back into Schiphol, with the aircraft changing it’s squawk code from 7700 to 6252.

UPDATE #6 @ 2318 UK time – DL135 is descending through FL230 as the Airbus A350 originally bound for Detroit continues it’s return to Amsterdam.

UPDATE #7 @ 2321 UK time – DL135 has already got another departure slot from Schiphol being at 0130 local time, giving the strong possibility that it could be a medical emergency onboard the flight.

UPDATE #8 @ 2329 UK time – DL135 is now entering the final stages of the approach into Schiphol.

UPDATE #9 @ 2335 UK time – Delta Air Lines flight DL135 is now on finals into Amsterdam Schiphol, with the aircraft expected to continue on to Detroit later.

UPDATE #10 @ 2340 UK time – TOUCHDOWN! DL135 has touched down safely back into Schiphol after over four and a half hours in the air. As soon as we get confirmation regarding the emergency, we will update you accordingly.

UPDATE #11 @ 30/12/23 1632 UK time – @FlightEmergency on X confirms that the cause of the Delta Air Lines emergency yesterday was due to problems with the rudder in flight.
