An Air Transat transatlantic flight from Lyon to Montreal has declared an emergency as it transits French airspace en route.

Air Transat flight TS573, an Airbus A330-200 operating the long-haul transatlantic service from Lyon, France (LYS) to Montreal (YUL), declared a general emergency, squawking code 7700 whilst over French airspace outbound.

Having initiated the emergency call from the cruise as it transited French airspace, flight TS573 is now making a diversion to Nantes (NTE).

Air Transat flight TS573 is now establishing on finals for RWY03 Nantes Atlantique Airport (NTE). The nature of the emergency which resulted in the unscheduled diversion is not known as this time.

Air Transat flight Lyon - Montreal declares emergency

Weather for the flight’s arrival this afternoon at Nantes is visual meteorological conditions (VFR), with a 5,000 foot cloud base and more than 10km visibility.

Flight data shows that the aircraft made an on-time departure from Lyons (LYS) this morning; showing an actual time of departure of 10:19 CEST against a scheduled departure time of 10:00 CEST.

The flight then proceeded outbound normally, climbing to 38,000 feet on the westerly track before declaring an emergency with squawk code 7700 at 11:50 UTC, before initiating a descent and diversion into Nantes.

@FlightEmergency on Twitter has confirmed that the cause of the emergency onboard Air Transat flight TS573 between Lyon and Montreal was due to smell of burning in the cockpit.
