Ukraine has begun talks with the European Union and the U.S over the restart of commercial flights from Kyiv Boryspil International Airport.

A report from the Kyiv Post has confirmed that negotiations have begun, as the path to restart infrastructure continues.

Without further ado, let’s get into it…

No Timeline Set on The Restart of Kyiv Flights…

Such reports of a potential restart of flights out of Kyiv came from Alexander Kubrakov, the Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction and Minister for Community, Territory, and Infrastructure Development.

The Kyiv Post confirmed this with Kubrakov’s spokesperson, who said the following:

“It is impossible to make international flights without the approval of two regulators – European and American – this is how it works”.

Furthermore, it is understood that Ukraine has consulted the Israeli Civil Aviation Authority.

This is to acquire best practices for safe airport operation in Kyiv when there are chances of rocket attacks.

The Ukrainian Government will also have to provide guidance on how the airport would run under martial law.

Such information would be the following:

  • Risk assessments.
  • Approaches for the aircraft.
  • Operations with the regulators.

No overall timeline has been confirmed for when commercial flights will begin out of Kyiv as of yet.

Will It Be Safe Enough to Do So?

Safety will of course be a question when conducting a restart of flights from Kyiv.

However, there is a level of confidence amongst airlines that it will be safe to operate.

Kubrakov said the following on this:

“Several European airlines are very interested and willing and say they will be among the first to do so. I do not wish to name them at this point.”

It remains clear in this instance, that the focus on safety will mean in a significant time period for Kyiv flights to restart.

Security does appear to be bolstered in Ukraine, however.

It is understood that President Zelensky’s Chief of Staff mentioned that the country has become progressively stronger over the last year.

This means that the relevant enhanced security can be provided to Kyiv Boryspil International Airport.

Either way, it is going to be interesting to see what the timeline will be, especially when the Americans & Europeans approve plans.

Positive Moves Ahead…

Overall, the fact that Ukraine has started talks to restart commercial flights out of Kyiv is a good sign.

It’s a good sign for the aviation industry, who are very keen to restart flights into the country.

Looking ahead, all eyes will be on when the Government submits such plans to the Europeans & Americans.

From there, we could begin to see route announcements take place in the short-to-medium term.
