In a significant move towards a greener aviation industry, Trollhättan-Vänersborg Airport, located in the southwestern part of Sweden, is set to become the world’s first airport to exclusively offer blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for all aircraft refuelling.

This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with departing flights. Neste, a leading provider of renewable fuel solutions, will supply its Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ to Trollhättan Airport, blended at a ratio of 30-40% with conventional jet fuel.

By the end of June, this sustainable fuel will be made available for refueling operations.

Västflyg to become first airline

Västflyg, a prominent Swedish commercial airline, will take the lead as the first airline to power all its flights using this SAF blend.

The airline plans to utilize this fuel mixture not only for its regular routes between Trollhättan and Bromma, as well as Trollhättan and Visby in Sweden but also for its charter flights originating from Trollhättan.

This ambitious undertaking is also backed by GKN Aerospace, a renowned multi-technology aerospace supplier.

Anna Råhnängen, the airport manager at Trollhättan-Vänersborg Airport, emphasizes the commitment to sustainability and the aspiration to accelerate the transition towards a more eco-friendly aviation industry through this investment in SAF.

She, along with Västflyg and Neste, aims to inspire and pave the way for a sustainable future.

The rapid growth of air travel poses a challenge in terms of increased aviation-related emissions. Anna Petre, CEO of Västflyg, highlights the necessity to address this issue and explains how a high blend of SAF will lead to an immediate reduction in GHG emissions across all flights.

Refuelling of all departing aircraft

Sustainable aviation fuel, such as Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, is recognized as a crucial tool for achieving aviation’s emission reduction goals.

Trollhättan-Vänersborg Airport and Västflyg have taken a significant and commendable step by using blended SAF for refueling all departing aircraft. This move really sets an inspiring example for airports and airlines worldwide.

Alexander Kueper, Vice President EMEA of Neste’s Renewable Aviation business unit, commends the pioneering efforts of Trollhättan-Vänersborg Airport and Västflyg. He acknowledges their commitment to reducing emissions and believes their adoption of blended SAF will inspire others to follow suit.

GKN Aerospace, an active participant in promoting the green transition within the aviation industry, also lauds Västflyg and Trollhättan-Vänersborg Airport for their substantial steps towards climate-neutral aviation.

Their collective actions pave the way for further industry players to embrace sustainable practices. Martin Wänblom, VP Site Operations at GKN Aerospace Sweden, expresses the belief that collaboration and partnership are crucial in making significant differences, and he is proud to support Västflyg and the airport in this leading initiative.

One of the key advantages of sustainable aviation fuel is its ability to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unblended Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel can reduce emissions by up to 80% over the fuel’s life cycle when compared to conventional jet fuel.

Current certifications allow SAF to be blended with conventional jet fuel at a maximum ratio of 50%. Neste’s SAF is derived from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, including used cooking oil and animal fat waste, ensuring a sustainable and environmentally friendly source.
