This week, Tokyo Haneda International Airport went ahead with the re-opening of its Terminal 2 facility, which has been closed for over three years through the global pandemic period.

In a much-awaited move, Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd. and Tokyo International Air Terminal Corporation have now reopened the Terminal 2 (international common use area) facility from 19 July 2023.

This reopening comes after the terminal had to be closed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The decision to reopen this essential facility reflects the steady recovery of passenger traffic and a resumption of international services at the airport.

Tokyo Haneda Terminal 2 transformation

Terminal 2 had previously catered exclusively to domestic flights, but with the growing demand for international services, the Corporate Group expanded its capacity.

The renovated terminal now boasts new arrival and departure floors, along with duty-free shops and other amenities.

It initially began operations on 29 March 2020, running parallel to the extended Terminal 3, which also caters to international flights.

The strategic intent behind these expansions was to facilitate the increasing number of international services and strengthen connections with flights on Haneda’s extensive domestic network, a key feature of the airport’s services.

Closure due to COVID-19 impact

Unfortunately, Terminal 2’s operation was cut short just two weeks after its inauguration on 11 April 2020, owing to the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic; necessitating strict safety measures and restricting airport operations.

Consequently, the Corporate Group elected to close the short-lived Terminal 2 temporarily.

With the nation’s subsequent re-classification of COVID-19 as a Category 5 infectious disease, the facility moved to a re-opening this week.

Supporting Passenger Traffic Recovery

With time, the situation surrounding the pandemic has evolved, leading to a gradual recovery in passenger traffic. Responding to this positive development, the Corporate Group made the decision to reopen Terminal 2.

The reopening aims to meet the increasing demand for international travel as people resume their plans and connect with the world once again.

Current operations and airlines at Terminal 2

Presently, All Nippon Airlines (ANA) is utilizing Terminal 2 for its flight services to major international destinations such as London, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taipei.

The airport authorities have restricted the opening times of the terminal, with operations commencing at 5:00 AM on Wednesday, 19 July.

The terminal’s daily operating hours are from 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM (JST), catering to the morning and early afternoon travel schedules. These operating hours are currently subject to change.
