China Eastern Airlines is set to bridge the gap between Western Australia and mainland China with an exclusive service operating over the bustling Chinese New Year holiday.

This four-week seasonal trial, scheduled from January 19 to February 17, 2024, will witness three non-stop flights per week shuttling between Perth (PER) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG).

A Positive for Perth Airport

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm, particularly by Perth Airport Chief Operating Officer, Scott Woodward. The service symbolizes a successful collaboration between Perth Airport, Tourism WA, and the State Government.

Woodward expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the significance of the direct link between Shanghai and Perth in boosting key export areas such as fresh produce, business, and leisure tourism.

Catalyst for Economic Growth

The strategic importance of this service extends beyond the convenience of travel. With Shanghai merely 10 hours away via this non-stop flight, Western Australia anticipates a substantial economic boost.

The ease of access will open new avenues for trade and tourism, creating a ripple effect that benefits the entire regional economy.

“It also offers great potential for both tourism and business in Western Australia, and we look forward to building a strong partnership with China Eastern Airlines to ensure the trial’s success and hopefully see the airline operate a year-round service at Perth Airport in the future,” remarked Mr. Woodward.

Beyond the economic implications, the timing of the service aligns perfectly with the flamboyant and colorful celebration of Chinese New Year.

Passengers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the traditions and festivities, making it an attractive proposition for both leisure and business travelers.

Perth’s Ascent as a Chinese Tourist Destination

China Eastern Airlines, operating its Shanghai service on the A330-200 aircraft with 232 seats, is making a significant contribution to Perth’s global connectivity.

The flights (MU7389 and MU7390) are scheduled on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, arriving in Perth at 10:00 am and departing at 12:30 pm until February 18, 2023.

Perth Airport, in collaboration with the State Government and Tourism WA, is dedicated to promoting Perth and Western Australia as premier destinations for Chinese visitors.

The focus is not just on the immediate success of the trial but on establishing a lasting partnership that could potentially lead to a year-round service, further solidifying the bond between these two vibrant regions.
