Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has this week announced the handling of 5.2m passengers in March 2024.

The airport is continuing it’s growth trajectory ahead of what is expected to be a busy Summer 2024 season.

Without further ado, let’s get into it…

The Numbers in Amsterdam…

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport handled 5.2m passengers in March 2024.

Furthermore, this represents an increase of 14% compared to the same period in 2023.

The four countries which performed the best from the airport was the UK, Spain, Italy and the United States.

In their report, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport said the following on the numbers:

“In March 2024, 5.2 million passengers flew to, from or via Schiphol. 3.1 million departed from or arrived at Schiphol, and almost 2.1 million transferred at the airport.”

“There were 1.050.000 transfer passengers, who are counted twice in accordance with the international counting method: once as an arriving passenger and once as a departing passenger.”

“Almost 3.7 million passengers arrived from or flew to a destination in Europe.”

“Almost 1.6 million passengers arrived from or flew to an intercontinental destination outside Europe.”

“The United Kingdom was the most popular destination, followed by Spain, Italy, the United States and Turkey.

More Passengers On The Way?

More passengers will no doubt be on the way and contribute to Amsterdam Schiphol’s overall numbers.

Back in December, they revealed that they have room for 483,000 flights in 2024, as conditional relief is handed to the airport.

Of the 483,000 flights, 293,000 have been allocated for the Summer season, with the rest for the rest of the year.

However, as mentioned by the airport in December, there are conditions for this:

“At the request of the minister, we reviewed what was operationally possible after the experimental scheme was taken off the table.”

“More flights are now possible, but this is only safe and responsible provided we reduce pressure on certain peak hours.”

“The busy peak times require a major effort from the entire aviation sector and the involved government partners.”

“In order to offer travellers a pleasant and safe journey, we really need each other at the airport.”

“We’ve discussed this with each other a lot over the past weeks, and everyone is aware of that. It’s good to see that airlines have committed to helping reduce peak traffic.”

Overall…

In conclusion, the numbers are strong for Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

The next indicator for success will be how passenger numbers look in the Summer 2024 season.

With conditional relief applied to the airport, all eyes will be on how far this goes.

It will be the hope for airlines at the airport that the continuation of high capacity continues.
