Without further ado, let’s get into it…

The flight cancellations in Lithuania from Wizz Air are as follows:

  • Vilnius:
    • Nice
    • Reykjavik
  • Kaunas:
    • Bergen
    • Ålesund
    • Stavanger

Wizz Air did confirm that it would be “temporary” due to the ongoing engine checks on it’s aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney.

More than 20% of the airline’s fleet is grounded due to issues with the PW-1100G-JM engine.

It is understood up to 3,000 engines around the world need to be inspected by the manufacturer.

The Bigger Problem Facing The Airline…

With 20% of Wizz Air’s fleet grounded, it means that routes have to be cut as a result.

As well as flights out of Lithuania, the airline has removed 103 routes from it’s system at the start of this month.

It affects operations all around Europe, as well as some destinations in the Middle East.

This, of course, needs to be constantly managed by Wizz Air to ensure maximized revenue in these difficult times.

It will be interesting to see what other routes will be removed from the system following the fleet grounding.

If more aircraft in the fleet need to be grounded, then we can expect to see another list of flight cancellations similar to what we have seen in Lithuania particularly.

Overall…

In conclusion, the cancellation of flights out of Lithuania are reflective of a wider issue that Wizz Air is having.

All eyes will be on the airline’s side to see if more cancellations get unveiled throughout this year.

This will be a problem that we will see for years to come, especially as Pratt & Whitney get through things engine-by-engine.

But for now, let’s see what happens going into the future.
