Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier of Vietnam has recently been honored with the prestigious “Boldest Move” award by SkyTeam.

This award, a subcategory of The Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC), was bestowed upon Vietnam Airlines on October 3 in Atlanta, Georgia, in recognition of their pioneering efforts in fostering sustainability.

Additionally, Vietnam Airlines secured a spot in the top 3 airlines for the Cleaning Waste Management Solution subcategory.

The ‘Boldest Move’ Award

The “Boldest Move” award was presented to Vietnam Airlines in acknowledgment of their pioneering initiative.

This initiative involves providing surplus, high-quality inflight food to VietHarvest, a groundbreaking social enterprise dedicated to collecting surplus food and distributing it to underserved communities in Vietnam.

Dang Anh Tuan, the Executive Vice President of Vietnam Airlines, expressed his pride in receiving this award and said, “This award illustrates Vietnam Airlines’ commitment to reducing food waste, addressing hunger and poverty, and creating a sustainable food culture and eco-system in Vietnam.”

“We are not only focused on raising awareness and exploring innovative approaches but also on collaborating with airlines worldwide to reshape the future of aviation. Our shared goal is to achieve net-zero emissions in the aviation industry by 2050.”

The Sustainable Flight Challenge

In May 2023, Vietnam Airlines completed a significant milestone when they operated a long-haul flight, VN37, from Hanoi, Vietnam to Frankfurt, Germany, as part of SkyTeam’s Sustainable Flight Challenge.

The primary objective of this challenge is to encourage global airlines to explore innovative ways to make air travel more environmentally friendly. Vietnam Airlines partnered with Limloop to recycle hundreds of unusable life vests into handbags for passengers on the flight.

Additionally, passengers on this special flight were treated to a sustainable inflight meal prepared using seasonal ingredients and alternative plant-based protein sources derived from sustainably grown soybeans.

This partnership was established in collaboration with the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC).

The Power of Friendly Competition

The Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC) was launched in 2022 and has since been instrumental in sparking new innovations aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of air travel.

In the latest iteration of the challenge, 22 airlines participated, operating a total of 72 flights, which is 50 more flights than the previous year. These airlines collectively submitted over 350 novel ideas that are set to revolutionize the aviation industry.

A panel of international aviation and sustainability experts rigorously evaluated these submissions and ultimately determined the winners across 25 subcategories and 7 overarching awards.

Summary

Vietnam Airlines’ commitment to sustainability, innovation, and overall development is unwavering. The airline is dedicated to providing passengers with a high-quality experience while leading the charge in transforming the aviation industry into a more eco-conscious and sustainable one.

Their recent achievements, such as the “Boldest Move” award and participation in the Sustainable Flight Challenge, exemplify their dedication to these core principles.
