Turkish Airlines named ‘Most Sustainable Flag Carrier Airline’ in World Finance Awards

For a second consecutive year, Turkish Airlines has been recognised for its sustainability initiatives, having been named ‘Most Sustainable Flag Carrier Airline’ in the World Finance Awards.

The aviation industry faces significant challenges in the wake of the climate crisis. However, Turkish Airlines, known as the global face of Türkiye, is taking remarkable strides to combat climate change.

In recognition of its efforts, the airline has been crowned the ‘Most Sustainable Flag Carrier Airline’ in the esteemed World Finance’s Sustainability Awards for both 2022 and 2023.

In the latest summer issue of the magazine, Turkish Airlines highlights its commitment to sustainable travel.

The airline has implemented various initiatives, including the introduction of the CO2 mission platform for voluntary carbon offset, the utilization of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), the provision of in-flight sustainable products, effective waste management, and digitalization projects.

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat, the Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee of Turkish Airlines, shared his vision within an exclusive article featured in World Finance.

He stated, “Turkish Airlines has set a goal to become one of the top three airlines globally in terms of digitization within the next three years as part of our strategic plan.”

“In alignment with our commitment to be a ‘Carbon Neutral Airline in 2050,’ we have significantly expanded the usage of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) since 2022, with plans to add more lines in 2023 to further combat climate change.”

Turkish Airlines sustainability initiatives


Since 2008, Turkish Airlines has undertaken over 100 operational optimization projects aimed at reducing its carbon footprint.

These efforts range from voluntary carbon offset programs to the utilization of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), in-flight sustainable products, and efficient waste management.

Moreover, Turkish Airlines has embraced digitalization projects to enhance operational efficiency and reduce its ecological footprint.

From a flight operations perspective, a focus on improving fuel efficiency and optimizing of flight routes has paid off for the carrier.

Remarkably, in 2022 alone, the airline managed to save 57,581 tonnes of fuel, resulting in a reduction of 181,379 tonnes of greenhouse gases.
