Thai AirAsia has successfully launched its inaugural service utilizing Fifth-Freedom rights, with Japan flights operating via Taiwan.

This innovative approach by the budget airline opens up exciting new travel opportunities, particularly between Taiwan and Japan. This was ably demonstrated by the impressive 99% load factor on the Taipei-Okinawa leg.

About Thai AirAsia

Established in 2003, Thai AirAsia has carved a niche for itself in the Thai aviation industry. The airline prides itself on offering a fun, friendly, and affordable flying experience.

Part of the AirAsia Group, the world’s largest low-cost carrier by passengers flown, Thai AirAsia boasts a modern fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft, renowned for their efficiency and comfort.

With a strong focus on domestic and regional connectivity, Thai AirAsia caters to budget-conscious travelers seeking convenient and reliable air travel across Southeast Asia and beyond.

New Routes: Thailand via Taiwan to Japan

Thai AirAsia’s new Fifth-Freedom flights offer smooth connections between Bangkok, Taiwan (Taipei and Kaohsiung), and Japan (Okinawa and Tokyo).

  • Route 1: Don Mueang (Bangkok) – Taipei – Okinawa: This daily service departs Don Mueang Airport at 7:25 am. It arrives in Taipei at 12:20 pm to pick up passengers before continuing its journey to Okinawa, landing at 3:55 pm.
  • Route 2: Don Mueang (Bangkok) – Kaohsiung – Tokyo (Narita): Operating four times weekly (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays). This route departs Don Mueang at 2:45 am, reaching Kaohsiung at 7:15 am for additional boarding. The flight then takes off for Tokyo (Narita) at 8:00 am, arriving at 12:55 pm.

Fifth-Freedom Rights: Expanding Options for Passengers

Mr. Santisuk Klongchaiya, CEO of Thai AirAsia, underscored the importance of these Fifth-Freedom flights. He pointed to the creation of greater travel opportunities to Japan’s popular destinations like Tokyo and Osaka.

He expressed gratitude to the airports, tourism authorities, and agencies that played a vital role in promoting these new routes, which directly connect Taiwan and Japan.

This newfound connectivity has resonated strongly with travelers, indicating a significant market demand for budget-friendly travel options between these regions.

“While incorporating stopovers to pick up passengers presents a new operational challenge, it allows us to connect with a wider audience in both Japan and Taiwan,” Mr. Santisuk remarked.

“The overwhelming positive response to the launch of both Don Mueang-Taipei-Okinawa and Don Mueang-Kaohsiung-Tokyo routes. This reinforces our commitment to actively promoting this new service.”

Kaohsiung-Tokyo Inaugural Flight

Further emphasizing its dedication to a positive passenger experience, Thai AirAsia hosted a celebratory ceremony for the Kaohsiung-Tokyo route’s inaugural flight.

Passengers were treated to certificates, souvenirs, and festivities at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
