Spirit Airlines celebrates three decades of operations in Fort Myers

Spirit Airlines (NYSE: SAVE) is celebrating three decades of serving Southwest Florida with the start of the only nonstop flight between Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport (SJU) and Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW).

Spirit first landed in Fort Myers in 1993 and has grown to offer nonstop service to 14 destinations and 20-peak day departures from the Midwest to the East Coast.

Three Decades in Southwest Florida


In 1993, Spirit Airlines made its inaugural landing in Fort Myers, and since then, it has grown exponentially, now offering nonstop service to 14 destinations and boasting an impressive 20-peak day departures from the Midwest to the East Coast.

John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines, expressed gratitude to the Fort Myers community for their unwavering support.

Kirby stated, “RSW is a great, long-time partner of Spirit Airlines, and we’re thankful to the Fort Myers community for their continued support as we add the only nonstop service to SJU on our 30th anniversary.”

The addition of nonstop service to San Juan brings forth an exciting opportunity to connect two vibrant communities with reliable and convenient service, fostering stronger ties and easier travel between these two enchanting locations.

Spirit Airlines continues to spread its wings with the recent launch of three new routes from RSW in November.

The addition of flights to Charleston (CHS), Norfolk (ORF), and Richmond (RIC) further solidifies Spirit’s commitment to providing diverse and accessible travel options for its passengers.

Gateway to the Caribbean


Ben Siegel, Executive Director of the Lee County Port Authority, expressed positivity about Spirit’s new nonstop flights to San Juan. “San Juan is the most highly sought Caribbean destination at RSW,” he said.

This new service not only offers Southwest Florida travelers the chance to visit the beautiful island of Puerto Rico but also serves as a gateway for business partners and visitors to explore the charms of Fort Myers and its surrounding regions.

Recognition and Awards


Spirit Airlines garnered notable industry recognition in the past year. Aviation Week Network’s Air Transport World (ATW) named Spirit Airlines the Value Airline of the Year as part of the ATW 2023 Airline Industry Achievement Awards.

The carrier’s commitment to passenger satisfaction was further acknowledged in the 2024 APEX/IFSA Awards, where Spirit received a Four Star Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) rating – the highest in its category based solely on passenger feedback.

In addition to these accolades, Spirit Airlines has upheld an exemplary standard of safety, receiving the FAA’s “Aviation Maintenance Technician Diamond Award of Excellence” for the fifth consecutive year.

Furthermore, Travel Weekly recognized the Spirit Charitable Foundation with a Gold Winner award in the 2023 Magellan Awards for Giving Back.
