Czech leisure carrier, Smartwings, is further expanding its offerings from Prague for the upcoming summer season with the launch of direct flights to the Azores.

Commencing on April 26, 2024, the Czech carrier will be launching direct flights from Prague to João Paulo II Airport, which serves Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel. Ponta Delgada is the largest municipality on the Portuguese Azores islands.

The Azores

The Azores is a group of nine volcanic islands. Located in the Atlantic Ocean. The Azores are well renowned for stunning natural beauty, including picturesque landscapes, volcanic craters, and hot springs.

Smartwings is hoping these attributes will make Ponta Delgada a popular route with Czech holidaymakers.

The airline is the first to offer this direct route from Prague. The new route promises to provide travelers with a convenient and hassle-free way to reach the Azores without the need to change aircraft or airports.

The flights are planned to operate twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. Departing from Prague’s Václav Havel Airport.

Flight QS1172 will take off at 12:00 noon and arrive in Ponta Delgada at 15:30 local time with a considerable flight time of five hours and thirty minutes.

Boeing 737 MAX 8 service

Smartwings has scheduled their 737 MAX 8 aircraft to operate the route, with the new aircraft boasting improved range and fuel performance compared to their conventional 737NGs.

From September 14, travelers can purchase their tickets to Ponta Delgada. They can do so through the official websites of Smartwings and Czech Airlines through a code-share partnership. Tickets are also available from various flight ticket vendors.

Peter Šujan, the sales director of Smartwings, expressed his excitement about offering this new holiday destination to their customers.

He mentioned that “We connect Prague with scheduled flights with the Canary Islands of Tenerife (daily from 6 May 2024), Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, and with Portuguese Madeira.

“We are happy that from April, we will be offering our customers another attractive destination in the Atlantic, the largest Azores island of São Miguel.”

Under the 2024 summer flight schedule, Smartwings will be operating direct flights from Czech airports to over 70 destinations.

This extensive network ensures that travelers have a wide range of choices when planning their summer getaways.
