Regional Express Group (Rex) has announced a collaboration with Helicopter Resources Pty Ltd (Heli Resources) through an exclusive teaming agreement. This strategic partnership forms part of the Rex move to compete for the upcoming tender by the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) later this year.

The announcement of the proposed partnership also follows the recent release of the Request for Information (RFI) by AAD.

This outlines the need for up to four twin-engine helicopters, capable of seamlessly transitioning between land and sea operations, including operations aboard the RSV Nuyina – the flagship vessel of the Division.

The alliance structure

At the heart of this joint venture, Rex proudly assumes the role of the prime contractor, while Heli Resources takes on the crucial position of the sub-contractor.

Their collaborative efforts are entirely focused on providing a holistic and complementary helicopter solution that aligns seamlessly with the requirements of the Antarctic tender.

It’s important to note that Heli Resources boasts the distinction of being the incumbent provider of similar services to the AAD, with an impressive track record that spans back to 1975.

Their ability to effectively operate helicopters in the challenging Antarctic environment for over 48 years has earned them an enviable reputation both within the industry and among the AAD.

Partnership statements

Craig Martin, Rex’s Antarctic Project Manager, expressed his confidence in this partnership, stating, “When it comes to experience in operating within the Antarctic landscape, there’s no other helicopter operator that comes close.”

“Heli Resources has consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment to safety and the reliable delivery of helicopter services, establishing deep-rooted trust with the AAD through decades of Antarctic operations.”

“Rex couldn’t have hoped for a more fitting partner to address the anticipated requirements for complementary helicopter capabilities in the upcoming tender.”

Bill English, Chairman and Managing Director of Heli Resources, echoed this sentiment with enthusiasm, “The exclusive teaming agreement with Rex for the Antarctic tender is a cause for celebration.”

“With Heli Resources’ extensive history and unmatched experience, we are fully confident that, in partnership with Rex, we’ll present a helicopter solution that not only meets but exceeds expectations in terms of quality and reliability.”

“This collaboration signifies a momentous milestone for both entities, and we are keen to harness our combined expertise to support the AAD’s crucial missions in this unique and demanding environment.”

A wider vision

The collaboration with Heli Resources is part of Rex’s broader plan to engage with specialist providers to manage other aspects of the Program that demand more specialised complementary expertise.

Rex is Australia’s largest independent regional and domestic airline operating a fleet of 58 Saab 340 and 8 Boeing 737-800NG aircraft to 57 destinations throughout all states in Australia.

In addition to the airline Rex, the Rex Group comprises wholly owned subsidiaries Pel-Air Aviation (air freight, aeromedical and charter operator), the Australian Airline Pilot Academy with campuses in Wagga Wagga and Ballarat.

It also operates propeller maintenance organisation, Australian Aerospace Propeller Maintenance. Rex is also a 50% shareholder of National Jet Express (NJE), a premier Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO), charter and freight operator.
