PLAY Airlines reported a remarkable profit of USD 12 million during the summer months of 2023. This disclosure was made during the company’s recent market update meeting, and marks a significant achievement for the carrier.

For the first time ever, PLAY Airlines has managed to generate profit from its operations after taxes at the close of the summer season.

A Turnaround of Fortune

The summer of 2023 was nothing short of spectacular for PLAY Airlines, as they went from a USD 3 million loss during the same period the previous year to a whopping USD 12 million profit.

This remarkable turnaround amounts to a staggering USD 15 million shift from loss to profit in just one year.

One of the most striking aspects of PLAY Airlines’ success story is the exponential growth in revenue. In 2022, the company recorded revenues of USD 63 million during the summer season.

However, in the summer of 2023, they nearly doubled their revenue, reaching an impressive USD 116 million. What makes this feat even more astonishing is that PLAY Airlines managed to achieve this substantial growth while increasing seat capacity by 70%.

Operational Performance

This surge in unit revenue per seat kilometer (RASK) demonstrates the airline’s strong position in its key markets, outpacing many of its competitors.

Furthermore, PLAY Airlines boasted an impressive 89% load factor during the summer of 2023, significantly higher than its main rivals in the industry.

Despite a substantial increase in activity, PLAY Airlines managed to maintain an 83.9% punctuality rate during the summer months, a testament to their operational efficiency.

The airline also expanded its fleet by acquiring four new aircraft and introducing 13 new destinations for the summer, further highlighting their ability to adapt and grow successfully.

Positive Outlook for Q3

Looking ahead, PLAY Airlines is poised for continued success. Management estimates project an operating profit of approximately USD 10 million for the third quarter of 2023, compared to just USD 1.3 million in the same period in 2022.

This represents a significant turnaround of at least USD 8.7 million year-over-year. The airline expects to maintain this momentum, anticipating a profit of approximately USD 4 million for the third quarter.

Strong Financial Position

PLAY Airlines is also in a strong financial position, with an estimated cash balance of approximately USD 39 million by the end of the third quarter.

This robust financial standing means that the company does not require additional funds for its operations. As the year ends, PLAY expects its cash balance to stabilize at around USD 28 million.

Moreover, the cash flow from the company’s operations is neutral, even after accounting for investments in expanding its fleet.

A Remarkable Turnaround

In summary, PLAY Airlines is on a strong trajectory. With an estimated 1.5 million passengers to be carried in 2023 and an operating loss of only USD 10 million for the year, this marks a substantial improvement from the USD 44 million operating loss in 2022, amounting to a turnaround of USD 34 million.

The company’s revenue is expected to reach approximately USD 280 million in 2023, with a cost per seat kilometer excluding fuel (CASK Ex Fuel) estimated at around USD 3.7 cents for the full fiscal year.
