Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) airlines – Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and MASwings – will now be allocating over 18,000 additional seats during the upcoming Hari Raya peak travel period.

Hari Raya travel demand

The additional seat allocations is to accommodate the expected domestic travel surge beginning 18 April to 1 May 2023 and ensure customers are reunited with their loved ones.

The additional seat allocation is on top of the additional 20,000 seats which were launched on 29 March 2023. The surge in demand has meant that these are currently almost fully sold out.

Flight service additions

For seamless travel during the peak travel period, Malaysia Airlines will be upgrading its services by using the larger Airbus A330 to Kota Kinabalu on 20 and 30 April, as well as 1 May.

The carrier is also adding another 54 extra flights to Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Kota Bahru, Alor Setar, Terengganu, Kuantan, Labuan, Bintulu, Sibu and Miri to ensure convenience for passengers.

With the additional seats, the fares will be dynamically adjusted downwards, making it affordable for passengers to travel back to their hometown for the Hari Raya celebrations.

Malaysia Airlines’ sister airline, Firefly has also increased its flight frequency to Kota Bharu and Kota Kinabalu to support the travel demand.

Hari Raya

In Malaysia, Hari Raya is a public holiday and is usually celebrated for two days. The festivities begin with the sighting of the new moon, which signals the end of the fasting month.

On the morning of the first day of Hari Raya, Muslims usually perform the Eid prayer in mosques or open areas, wearing new clothes as a symbol of renewal.

After the prayer, Malaysians typically visit family members and friends to exchange greetings and ask for forgiveness.

This practice is known as “mohon maaf” and is a significant part of the celebration. Families also gather to enjoy a feast of traditional Malay dishes, such as rendang, ketupat, lemang, and various sweets and snacks.
