In a promising development for the Scottish aviation landscape, direct flights between Dundee Airport and London Heathrow are set to continue for the next two years, fortified by renewed support through a Public Service Obligation (PSO).

This is backed by funding from the UK Government, Scottish Government, and Dundee City Council, with contributions from the Tay Cities Region Deal, and underscores the commitment to bolster routes that not only link the UK but also stimulate economic growth and tourism.

Funding support

Scottish airline Loganair, selected by Dundee City Council, will spearhead operations along this critical route. The Department for Transport’s allocation of half the PSO funding underscores a specific objective—to facilitate residents in Dundee in making round trips to London within a single day.

Beyond domestic convenience, the seamless connectivity offered by Heathrow Airport opens gateways to a myriad of international destinations, significantly elevating Dundee’s global reach.

Councillor Steven Rome, Fair Work, Economic Growth, and Infrastructure Convener at Dundee City Council, emphasizes the positive impact on Dundee’s connectivity and economic prospects:

“The move of flights from London City to Heathrow earlier this year has improved our city’s connectivity, and we anticipate further growth in passenger numbers with the award of this latest PSO.”

He acknowledges the airport’s economic role and local significance, adding, “The link to and from Heathrow will also increase international passenger numbers by connecting to BA’s global route network.”

Strategic advantage of Heathrow

Alison Henderson, CEO of Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce, echoes the sentiment of continuity and importance, stating, “I am delighted at the continuation of this link between Dundee and London Heathrow, which is very important for our city’s business, culture, and tourism.”

Highlighting the strategic advantage of Heathrow, Henderson notes, “Not only that, the advantage of Heathrow is that it opens up a host of onward connections to a range of international destinations. Award of the PSO for two years gives certainty that will help in efforts to further build demand for the future.”

Aviation Minister Anthony Browne emphasizes the foundational role of connectivity, stating, “Connectivity in today’s world is foundational to creating jobs and growing our economy.”

“That’s why today, the government has earmarked vital funding to continue the essential air service between London and Dundee.”

Business and tourism

Minister for Transport Fiona Hyslop reinforces the Scottish Government’s commitment to sustaining this service, recognizing its impact on business and tourism:

“The extension of this contract will continue to provide important connectivity for Dundee, benefiting business travelers and also supporting tourism by offering visitors a direct route to experience the city and surrounding area.”

Jonathan Hinkles, CEO of Loganair, expresses enthusiasm for the PSO contract, emphasizing its role in supporting opportunities for inward investment, tourism, and onward travel:

“We’re thrilled to have been awarded the PSO contract between Dundee and London Heathrow, which allows us to continue serving the people of Dundee and the wider region.”

Derrick Lang, Dundee Airport Manager, welcomes the continuation of the direct flight to London and underscores collaboration with Loganair to enhance connectivity between Tayside and the UK capital.

Summary

Dundee is set to join four other destinations offered by Loganair out of the UK’s largest airport, London Heathrow. These destinations include Derry in Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Kirkwall Airport (serving the Isle of Orkney), and finally Sumburgh Airport serving the Shetland Isles.

Amidst this aviation milestone, the Tay Cities Region Deal, a collaborative effort between local, Scottish, and UK governments, emerges as a pivotal force.

Designed to create a smarter and fairer region, the deal’s investment potential holds the promise of further economic development, job creation, and enhanced connectivity for Dundee and its surrounding areas.
