Japan Airlines new Airbus A350-1000 completed its first commercial flight this week, operating the long haul service between Tokyo Haneda and New York JFK.

On 24 January, Japan Airlines new flagship aircraft, the A350-1000, departed Tokyo Haneda at 1140 local time, operating as flight JL6 New York John F. Kennedy airport (JFK).

Further A350-1000 deliveries

The aircraft, which was delivered mid December 2023, became the first of 13 A350-1000 wide-body aircraft on order for the Japanese carrier. The second aircraft is expected to be delivered in March.

Until the arrival of the second aircraft, the airline will continue to operate the Tokyo to New York service every second day. The flight frequency will then ramp up to a daily service when the second aircraft joins the operational fleet.

The next generation aircraft is set to replace the carriers current long haul workforce comprising 13 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

With a seating capacity of just 239 in a four-class cabin configuration (First class, Business class, Premium economy and Economy), the airline has not formally disclosed the broader deployment of the new wide-body aircraft.

It has however informally stated on its social media channels of its plans to operate the aircraft to Dallas- Fort Worth, reportedly at the time of arrival of the third aircraft.

Japan Airlines has operated the smaller A350-900 variant since 2019, and sadly lost one aircraft recently in an accident at Tokyo Haneda Airport when it was involved in a landing collision with a smaller Dash 8 turboprop aircraft belonging to the Japanese Coastguard.
