IndiGo’s Africa safari begins with Mumbai-Nairobi flights

IndiGo, India’s major low-cost airline, has announced that Nairobi, the vibrant capital of Kenya, has been introduced as the 27th international and 105th overall destination in the expanding 6E network.

Commencing from August 5, 2023, IndiGo will operate daily non-stop flights connecting Mumbai, the financial capital of India, and Nairobi, the largest city in Kenya.

Entry to the African market

This new route signifies a further milestone for IndiGo as it marks the airline’s foray into the African subcontinent.

With its strategic entry into Nairobi, IndiGo aims to foster closer ties, trade relations, and travel opportunities between India and Kenya, thereby contributing to the promotion of economic growth in both countries.

Mr. Vinay Malhotra, the Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, expressed his delight on the milestone, stating, “We are thrilled to announce the launch of direct flights between Mumbai and Nairobi, which is a significant step towards strengthening the bilateral ties between India and Kenya.”

“As India emerges as Kenya’s third largest trading partner, witnessing increased investments, this new air route will further enhance our economic collaboration.”

“Kenya, as our first destination in Sub-Saharan Africa, encompasses diverse landscapes such as the Savannah, Lakelands, and mountain highlands.”


From Nairobi, travelers will be able to embark on safaris to the renowned Maasai Mara, as well as explore multiple other National Parks and Wildlife Reserves, providing numerous options for tourists.

Boosting Kenyan tourism

John Chirchir, the Acting CEO of the Kenya Tourism Board, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “Magical Kenya is delighted with IndiGo’s launch of direct flights from Mumbai to Nairobi, Kenya, starting in August 2023.”

“This represents a significant milestone in our efforts to increase the number of visitors from India, which is the leading market in Asia.”

“The direct access to Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city and a regional hub for business and travel, will provide leisure tourists, business visitors, and investors with a seamless connection to the destination, in addition to our national carrier, Kenya Airways.”

The Tourism Board works through collaborative marketing and sales campaigns to solidify Kenya’s appeal and attract more Indian travelers.

The introduction of direct flights between Mumbai and Nairobi holds tremendous potential in terms of enhancing accessibility for business travelers and boosting tourism, cultural exchanges, and collaboration across various fields.
