Hamad International Airport (DOH) has welcomed Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia’s national carrier, to its network. A new service from Jakarta marks a significant step in connecting Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

This daily service, which commenced April 4, 2024, utilizes a spacious 393-seater Boeing B777-300 aircraft. It offers a comfortable journey between Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) and Doha.

Travel Demand and Economic Growth

This strategic partnership builds upon Hamad International Airport’s existing robust Southeast Asian network, served by its national carrier, Qatar Airways.

Qatar Airways currently operates three daily flights to Jakarta, three daily flights to Bali, and three weekly flights to Medan. The Garuda Indonesia route signifies the growing demand for air travel between Qatar and Indonesia.

“The collaboration with Garuda Indonesia represents a pivotal moment in our strategic expansion into Southeast Asia,” says Sujata Suri, Senior Vice President of Finance & Procurement at Hamad International Airport.

“This partnership not only strengthens Hamad International Airport’s position as a global aviation hub but also fosters deeper ties with the Southeast Asian travel industry.”

He stated their commitment to building mutually beneficial alliances that drive economic growth, enhance connectivity, and solidifying the position as the preferred gateway between Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Boosting Trade and Tourism

Irfan Setiaputra, President & CEO of Garuda Indonesia, echoes the sentiment, and provides further comment.

“We are delighted to add Doha to our extensive global network. The strong business, tourism, and cultural ties between Indonesia and Qatar will be further bolstered by this new service.”

“It offers easier access for travelers from Qatar to Indonesia, a rapidly growing economic center. This route marks a significant milestone for Garuda Indonesia.”

“Passengers departing from Jakarta, Indonesia’s main hub, will now have a convenient gateway to Doha, the largest city and financial hub in the Gulf region.”

“This direct flight is also expected to attract Qatari tourists to explore the exotic destinations accessible from Jakarta, the gateway to Indonesia’s diverse offerings.”

Expanding Southeast Asian Connections

With Garuda Indonesia joining Malaysia Airlines and Philippine Airlines, Hamad International Airport now welcomes three Southeast Asian carriers. This significantly increases connectivity between the region and Qatar.

This move will likely boost travel demand and solidify trade ties between the two regions.

Indonesia’s economic growth keeps surging, positioning it to become the world’s sixth-largest economy by 2027.

Set amid this growth, this new partnership will play a crucial role in facilitating business and tourism exchanges.
