Leading Saudi low-cost carrier flynas has recently become an affiliate member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

This milestone not only positions flynas as the first Saudi airline but also marks the debut of a low-cost carrier from the Middle East in the global tourism organization.

The UNWTO Affiliation

flynas’ entry into the UNWTO as an affiliate member adds a new dimension to its commitment to sustainability.

As part of this influential network, flynas joins over 500 entities, including companies, educational institutions, and NGOs, fostering dialogue and collaboration.

This move is in sync with the airline’s sustainability strategy and also the broader vision of the Kingdom to shape the future of global travel.

Bander Almohanna, CEO and Managing Director of flynas, emphasizes the pioneering role this affiliation bestows upon the airline.

As the first Saudi airline and the inaugural low-cost carrier from the Middle East to join UNWTO, flynas solidifies its position as the 4th best low-cost airline globally.

Almohanna underscores that these membership goals perfectly align with flynas’ sustainability plan, focusing on initiatives with a positive impact on the environment, society, and the economy.

Sustainability at the Core

Almohanna further highlights that flynas places sustainability at the core of its operations. This commitment resonates with the Kingdom’s ambitious target of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.

This alignment reflects the airline’s dedication to shaping a sustainable tourism sector and contributing meaningfully to global environmental goals.

Hosting UNWTO General Assembly

Saudi Arabia’s selection to host the 26th General Assembly session of the UNWTO in 2025 is a testament to the country’s growing prominence in global tourism.

This marks the first time the Kingdom will host the General Assembly of a UN organization, showcasing its increasing influence on the world stage.

The UNWTO Executive Council’s approval of the Kingdom’s re-election as president of the council for 2024 further solidifies Saudi Arabia’s leadership in the realm of global tourism.

This decision, made at the 120th Executive Council meeting in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, underscores the country’s sustained commitment to steering international tourism initiatives.

UN Global Compact Membership

Last August, flynas made history by joining the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.

As the first airline in Saudi Arabia and the premier low-cost airline in the Middle East to join, flynas continues to set benchmarks for corporate sustainability in the aviation sector.

flynas’ success is mirrored in its accolades, with the Skytrax International Award recognizing it as the Best Low-cost Airline in the Middle East in 2023 for the sixth consecutive year.
