The deal between Ethiopian Airlines sees eight Boeing 777-9Xs ordered as firm, with options for 12 more.

Commenting on the deal was Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew who said the following:

“We are pleased to continue setting the trend in African aviation by adopting cutting-edge technologies to enhance our services and customer satisfaction.”

“Improving our operational performance and commitment to environmental sustainability, the 777-9 offers more flexibility, reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions”.

“We are grateful to Boeing for their long-standing partnership and support, and we eagerly anticipate flying the 777-9 across the African skies and beyond.”

Adding to this was Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing:

There is a very long-standing relationship between Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing, with this order for 777Xs bolstering that.

As per data from Planespotters.net, at the time of writing, the airline has the following aircraft in the fleet built by the American planemaker:

  • 3 Boeing 737-700s.
  • 11 737-800s.
  • 17 737 MAX 8s.
  • 3 767-300s.
  • 6 777-200s.
  • 4 777-300ERs.
  • 10 777 Freighters.
  • 19 787-8s.
  • 10 787-9s.

Around 83 of the 134 aircraft in the airline’s fleet are Boeing aircraft, with this latest 777X order adding to that.

Overall…

This represents a strong order for Ethiopian Airlines, as the airline continues thinking about the future.

Looking ahead, this is another positive order for the 777X, of which Boeing is trying to accrue more sales.

All eyes will be on whether anymore of the aircraft type will be ordered this year by prospective customers.

But for now, let’s see how the rest of 2024 goes for both sides.
