Budapest Airport is set to see the return of its direct connection to Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport in France with easyJet. This popular route was previously active pre-pandemic (2019/2020) with nearly 50,000 annual seats.

The service will now be relaunched by the airline from August 21 2024, and will then operate as a year-round service.

Initially, flights will operate twice a week. Budapest Airport anticipates an initial 38,000 seats sold annually, with the potential for increased frequency as early as summer 2025 due to historically high passenger numbers.

A Welcomed Return for Tourists and Skiers

The Budapest-Lyon route previously catered mainly to French leisure travelers (over 90% in 2019). However, as the service matured, it gained traction among Hungarians as well, with their share reaching 24%. This trend is expected to continue in 2024.

“The return of the Lyon route is very timely,” says Máté Ritter, Head of Airline Development at Budapest Airport.

“It perfectly aligns with the increasing tourism demand from France. Even without a direct connection in 2023, over 22,000 passengers transferred between Lyon and Budapest, making it one of our largest indirect city-pairs in Europe.”

Lyon’s convenient location near the French Alps, with many renowned ski resorts just a two-hour drive from the airport, is another factor expected to boost the route’s popularity for Hungarian skiers seeking winter adventures.
